Newborn's Liver & Intestine Surgery Success

Meet the Doctor Get Second Opinion

The multidisciplinary team at Advanced Mother & Child Care Centre, Park Hospital, comprising experts from Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Neonatology, NICU, and Pediatric Surgery, successfully managed a rare and life-threatening case of right-sided Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) in a newborn. This rare congenital condition, occurring in approximately 1 to 4 per 10,000 live births, caused the baby's liver and intestines to shift into the chest cavity, severely affecting lung development and breathing.

The condition was detected during pregnancy through antenatal ultrasound, enabling a planned delivery at a center equipped with advanced NICU and pediatric surgical facilities. Shortly after birth, the baby developed severe breathing difficulty and was immediately shifted to the NICU for stabilization and ventilator support.

In this rare case, the right lobe of the liver, gallbladder, and portions of the small and large intestine had migrated into the chest cavity, compressing the lungs and affecting breathing. After careful stabilization, a complex surgery was successfully performed by Dr. Harshita Kour, Pediatric Surgeon & Pediatric Urologist, when the baby was just 16 hours old.

During the procedure, the displaced organs were successfully repositioned into the abdomen, and the diaphragmatic defect measuring approximately 3 × 2 cm was repaired. Following surgery, the newborn received specialized NICU care and ventilatory support. The baby was gradually weaned off the ventilator, tolerated full feeds well, and made an encouraging recovery. The baby was successfully discharged and is now living a healthy, happy life with the family.

This remarkable outcome highlights the importance of early antenatal diagnosis, multidisciplinary neonatal care, timely surgical intervention, and advanced critical care support. The case was successfully managed through the collaborative efforts of Dr. Shital Bhardwaj (Obstetrician & Gynaecologist), Dr. Deepali Garg (Pediatrician & Neonatologist), Dr. Pankaj Jain (Pediatrician), and Dr. Harshita Kour (Pediatric Surgeon & Pediatric Urologist).

The success reflects the strength of Park Hospital's Advanced Mother & Child Care Centre, where specialists across maternal, neonatal, and pediatric services work together to deliver advanced care for complex congenital conditions.
