TVT / TVTO Procedure
Tension-Free Vaginal Tape (TVT) / Transobturator Tape (TVTO) Procedure at Park Hospitals is a specialized minimally invasive surgical treatment performed to manage stress urinary incontinence in women. Stress urinary incontinence is a condition in which urine leakage occurs during physical activities that increase pressure on the bladder, such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising, or lifting heavy objects. The condition commonly develops due to weakening of the pelvic floor muscles and tissues that support the bladder and urethra, often associated with childbirth, aging, hormonal changes, obesity, or pelvic surgeries. TVT and TVTO procedures are designed to provide support to the urethra and improve bladder control, helping women regain confidence and improve their quality of life.
Before recommending a TVT or TVTO procedure, gynecologists and urogynecology specialists conduct detailed evaluations to determine the severity and underlying cause of urinary incontinence. Diagnostic assessments may include physical examination, pelvic evaluation, urine analysis, bladder function studies, ultrasound imaging, cystoscopy, and urodynamic testing to assess bladder control and urinary function. Symptoms such as urine leakage during physical activity, frequent urination, urgency, difficulty controlling urination, or discomfort affecting daily activities are carefully evaluated before planning treatment. The procedure is personalized according to the patient’s age, medical history, pelvic floor condition, severity of symptoms, and overall reproductive and urinary health.
During the TVT or TVTO procedure, a specialized synthetic mesh tape is placed beneath the urethra to provide support and help prevent urine leakage during physical movement or pressure-related activities. In the TVT technique, the tape is positioned through a small vaginal incision and guided behind the pubic bone, while in the TVTO approach, the tape is passed through the obturator region to minimize tension and support the urethra effectively. The procedure is usually performed under anesthesia using minimally invasive techniques and requires only small incisions. Advanced surgical instruments, precision-guided techniques, and continuous monitoring help improve procedural accuracy, reduce complications, and enhance patient safety throughout treatment.
One of the major advantages of TVT and TVTO procedures is effective improvement in bladder control without the need for major surgery. Since the procedures are minimally invasive, patients generally experience reduced discomfort, shorter hospital stays, minimal scarring, and faster recovery. Many women experience significant reduction or complete relief from stress urinary incontinence symptoms following treatment, allowing them to return to daily activities with greater comfort and confidence. Improved bladder control can also enhance emotional well-being, social participation, and overall quality of life.
