ERCP

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) at Park Hospitals is a specialized minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the bile ducts, gallbladder, pancreas, and pancreatic ducts. The procedure combines endoscopy and imaging technology to identify blockages, stones, strictures, infections, or abnormalities within the digestive and biliary systems. ERCP is commonly recommended for patients experiencing jaundice, abdominal pain, bile duct obstruction, pancreatitis, gallstones, or unexplained digestive complications related to the liver and pancreas.

Before the procedure, gastroenterology specialists conduct detailed clinical evaluations, blood investigations, imaging studies, and assessment of symptoms to determine the need for ERCP. Patients are generally advised to fast for several hours before the procedure and may receive instructions regarding medication adjustments and pre-procedure preparation. The treatment approach is planned according to the patient’s condition, medical history, and the suspected location of obstruction or abnormality.

During the procedure, a thin flexible endoscope equipped with a camera is inserted through the mouth and guided into the stomach and upper part of the small intestine. A contrast dye is then injected into the bile and pancreatic ducts to make them visible on X-ray imaging. This allows specialists to identify narrowing, blockages, stones, or other abnormalities with precision. Depending on the findings, therapeutic interventions such as stone removal, stent placement, duct widening, or tissue sampling may also be performed during the same procedure. ERCP is generally carried out under sedation to ensure patient comfort throughout the examination and treatment process.

One of the major advantages of ERCP is its ability to both diagnose and treat biliary and pancreatic disorders without the need for major surgery. Since the procedure is minimally invasive, patients usually experience shorter recovery time, reduced discomfort, and quicker return to normal activities. Early intervention through ERCP can help relieve obstruction, improve digestive function, and prevent complications affecting the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.

With experienced gastroenterologists, advanced endoscopic technology, and comprehensive digestive care services, Park Hospitals provides specialized evaluation and treatment through ERCP procedures. Early diagnosis and timely intervention can help improve digestive health, reduce complications, and support better long-term outcomes for patients with biliary and pancreatic disorders.
