ECMO
Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) at Park Hospitals is an advanced life-support procedure used to provide temporary support to patients with severe heart or lung failure when conventional treatments are not sufficient. ECMO works by circulating blood through an external machine that adds oxygen and removes carbon dioxide before returning the blood to the body. The procedure helps support vital organ function while allowing the heart and lungs time to recover from critical illness or injury.
ECMO is commonly recommended for patients experiencing severe respiratory failure, cardiac failure, life-threatening infections, major cardiac complications, or conditions such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), severe pneumonia, heart attack complications, or post-cardiac surgery complications. Critical care specialists conduct detailed evaluations including blood investigations, imaging studies, cardiac assessments, and continuous monitoring to determine whether ECMO support is necessary. The decision to initiate ECMO depends on the patient’s condition, severity of organ failure, and response to other medical treatments.
During the procedure, specialized tubes called cannulas are inserted into major blood vessels to connect the patient to the ECMO machine. Blood is continuously circulated outside the body through the machine, where oxygen is added and carbon dioxide is removed before the blood is returned to the patient’s circulation. Depending on the medical condition being treated, ECMO may support lung function, heart function, or both. The patient remains under continuous monitoring in an intensive care setting throughout the duration of treatment.
One of the major advantages of ECMO is its ability to provide temporary life-saving support during severe cardiac or respiratory failure. By reducing the workload on the heart and lungs, ECMO allows critical organs time to heal while specialists continue advanced medical treatment. Continuous monitoring, infection control, nutritional support, ventilator management, and multidisciplinary intensive care also play an important role in improving recovery and patient outcomes during ECMO therapy.
With advanced critical care facilities, experienced intensivists, cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and specialized ECMO support teams, Park Hospitals provides comprehensive care for critically ill patients requiring advanced life-support management. Timely intervention, continuous monitoring, and expert multidisciplinary care can help improve survival outcomes and support recovery during severe medical emergencies.
