Sinusitis

Sinusitis is a condition characterized by inflammation or swelling of the tissues lining the sinuses, the air-filled cavities located within the bones surrounding the nose. When the sinuses become inflamed, normal drainage can be blocked, leading to mucus accumulation and an increased risk of infection. Sinusitis may be acute, lasting for a short period, or chronic, persisting for several weeks or months. At Park Hospitals, advanced ENT services, specialized diagnostic facilities, and comprehensive sinus care programs support the early diagnosis and effective management of sinusitis to help improve breathing, relieve symptoms, and enhance quality of life.

Several factors may contribute to the development of sinusitis. Common causes include viral infections such as the common cold, bacterial infections, allergies, nasal polyps, deviated nasal septum, environmental irritants, and chronic inflammatory conditions affecting the nasal passages. Individuals with weakened immune systems or recurrent respiratory infections may be at greater risk.

Symptoms often include nasal congestion, facial pain or pressure, thick nasal discharge, headache, reduced sense of smell, postnasal drip, cough, fatigue, and bad breath. Some individuals may also experience fever, ear pressure, or discomfort around the eyes and forehead. Symptoms may vary depending on the duration and severity of the condition.

If left untreated, sinusitis can lead to recurrent infections, chronic inflammation, breathing difficulties, sleep disturbances, and, in rare cases, the spread of infection to nearby structures such as the eyes or brain. Early medical evaluation can help prevent complications and improve recovery.

Diagnosis typically involves a detailed ENT examination, nasal endoscopy, allergy assessment, and imaging studies such as CT scans when necessary. These investigations help identify the underlying cause and determine the extent of sinus involvement.

Treatment depends on the cause and severity of symptoms. Management may include nasal saline irrigation, medications to reduce inflammation and congestion, treatment of allergies, antibiotics when appropriate, and endoscopic sinus surgery for persistent or complicated cases.

With experienced ENT specialists, advanced diagnostic technology, and comprehensive sinus care services, Park Hospitals provides personalized treatment and long-term management for individuals with sinusitis. Early diagnosis and timely intervention can help relieve symptoms, reduce recurrence, and support better respiratory health outcomes.
