Sciatica

Sciatica is a condition characterized by pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body. The sciatic nerve extends from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. Sciatica typically occurs when the nerve becomes compressed, irritated, or inflamed, resulting in pain and neurological symptoms that can affect mobility and daily activities. At Park Hospitals, advanced spine care services, specialized diagnostic facilities, and comprehensive rehabilitation programs support the early diagnosis and effective management of sciatica to help relieve pain and improve quality of life.

The most common cause of sciatica is a herniated or slipped disc that places pressure on the sciatic nerve. Other contributing factors include spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, bone spurs, spinal injuries, tumors, and conditions that narrow the spaces within the spine. Obesity, prolonged sitting, poor posture, and physically demanding occupations may increase the risk of developing sciatica.

Symptoms often affect one side of the body and may include lower back pain, pain radiating through the buttock and leg, numbness, tingling sensations, muscle weakness, and discomfort that worsens with sitting, coughing, or sudden movements. The severity of symptoms can range from mild irritation to debilitating pain.

If left untreated, severe nerve compression may lead to persistent pain, muscle weakness, reduced mobility, and, in rare cases, permanent nerve damage. Early evaluation is important to identify the underlying cause and prevent complications.

Diagnosis typically involves a detailed physical and neurological examination along with imaging studies such as X-rays, MRI, CT scans, and nerve conduction studies when necessary. These assessments help determine the source and extent of nerve compression.

Treatment depends on symptom severity and underlying causes. Management may include physical therapy, medications, posture correction, lifestyle modifications, spinal injections, and rehabilitation programs. Surgical intervention may be considered when conservative treatment fails or significant neurological deficits are present.

With experienced spine specialists, advanced diagnostic technology, and comprehensive rehabilitation services, Park Hospitals provides personalized treatment and long-term support for individuals with sciatica. Early diagnosis and timely intervention can help relieve symptoms, restore function, and support better long-term spinal health outcomes.
