Melanoma
Melanoma is a serious form of skin cancer that develops in melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. Although melanoma is less common than other skin cancers, it is more likely to spread to other parts of the body if not detected and treated early. The condition can develop anywhere on the skin and, in some cases, may also affect the eyes or other pigmented tissues. At Park Hospitals, advanced dermatology services, specialized skin cancer diagnostics, and comprehensive oncology care programs support the early diagnosis and effective treatment of melanoma to improve patient outcomes.
The primary risk factor for melanoma is excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight or tanning devices. Additional risk factors include fair skin, a history of severe sunburns, multiple or atypical moles, family history of melanoma, weakened immunity, and previous skin cancers. Individuals with increased sun exposure over time may have a higher risk of developing the condition.
Symptoms often involve changes in existing moles or the appearance of new pigmented skin lesions. Warning signs include asymmetry, irregular borders, changes in color, increasing size, itching, bleeding, or sores that do not heal. Early recognition of these changes is important for timely diagnosis.
If left untreated, melanoma can invade deeper layers of the skin and spread to lymph nodes and distant organs such as the lungs, liver, brain, and bones. Advanced melanoma may become significantly more difficult to treat and can be life-threatening.
Diagnosis typically involves a detailed skin examination, dermoscopic evaluation, tissue biopsy, imaging studies, and specialized staging investigations when necessary. These assessments help determine the extent of the disease and guide treatment planning.
Treatment depends on the stage and location of the melanoma. Management may include surgical removal, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation therapy, or other specialized treatments. Early-stage melanoma is often highly treatable when identified promptly.
With experienced dermatologists, oncologists, advanced diagnostic technology, and comprehensive cancer care services, Park Hospitals provides personalized treatment and long-term monitoring for individuals with melanoma. Early detection and timely intervention can significantly improve treatment outcomes and long-term survival.
